Two employee productivity formulas

FormulaWhat it tells youExample
Rate = output ÷ hoursHow much gets done per hour144 claims ÷ 8 h = 18 per hour
% of standard = actual output ÷ (standard rate × hours) × 100How the employee compares with the expected pace144 ÷ (20 × 8) = 90%
Two employee productivity formulas side by side: rate equals output divided by hours, 144 divided by 8 is 18 per hour; percent of standard equals output divided by standard times hours, 144 divided by 160 is 90 percent
Two ways to measure employee productivity

Team example

EmployeeOutputHoursRate% of 20/h standard
A144818.090%
B170821.3106%
C96616.080%
Team4102218.693%

Team totals come from adding output and hours first, then dividing, not from averaging the individual percentages.

How do you measure productivity fairly?

  • Count the work that matters, not only what’s easy to count
  • Adjust for task mix. Hard cases take longer.
  • Use paid hours consistently, with unpaid breaks taken out
  • Look at quality alongside quantity, such as error rates or rework
  • Share the formula with the people being measured
  • Look at trends, not single days

In health care, productivity numbers should never push staff to cut necessary care. For therapists, see our therapy productivity benchmarks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate employee productivity?

Divide output by hours worked for a rate, or divide actual output by the expected output for a percentage.

What is a good employee productivity percentage?

It depends on how the standard was set. 100% means meeting the standard exactly.

Is employee productivity the same as labor productivity?

They use the same idea. Labor productivity usually describes a business or the economy; employee productivity describes a person or team.
