How do you calculate SLP productivity?

Divide the minutes your employer counts as productive by your paid minutes, then multiply by 100. To plan your day, work backward from your target.

Paid time = billable minutes ÷ (target % ÷ 100)
Clock-out = start time + paid time + any unpaid lunch

Worked example: hospital outpatient SLP, 80% target

Kiara starts at 8:00 AM with 336 billable minutes and no unpaid lunch.

  • 336 ÷ 0.80 = 420 paid minutes (7 hours)
  • Clock-out: 3:00 PM
  • Non-billable time: 84 minutes

Worked example: pediatric hospital SLP, 75% target

Ben starts at 7:30 AM with 300 billable minutes.

  • 300 ÷ 0.75 = 400 paid minutes (6 h 40 min)
  • Clock-out: 2:10 PM
  • Non-billable time: 100 minutes

What productivity requirement do most SLPs have?

ASHA’s 2025 SLP Health Care Survey is the best public data for any rehab discipline. The overall median requirement has been 80% in every survey from 2015 to 2025.

A few things stand out:

  • SNFs are the highest and the most universal. Nine in ten SNF SLPs report a requirement, with a median of 85%.
  • Pediatric hospitals run lower, at a 70% median, but most pediatric hospital SLPs (83%) still have a requirement.
  • Home health is different. Only about a third of home health SLPs report a percentage requirement, possibly because many agencies track visits instead of a percentage.

What counts toward SLP productivity?

Less than you might hope. ASHA asked SLPs which activities count when the patient isn’t present:

Activity (patient not present)% of SLPs who say it counts, 20252015
Clinical team meetings12%20%
In-services or staff training10%18%
Documentation8%19%
Care coordination7%13%
Nothing counts40%64%

ASHA’s own position is that employers should count activities required for patient care, including care coordination, family training and documentation. If yours doesn’t, that’s worth raising, with the survey data in hand.

How SLP billing differs from PT and OT

Most PT and OT treatment codes are timed in 15-minute units. The main SLP treatment code, 92507 (speech, language, voice, communication and/or auditory processing treatment), is reported as one unit per session regardless of duration, under Medicare coding guidance. Group treatment uses 92508. The SLP evaluation code 92506 is also untimed.

What this means for you:

  • The 8-minute rule rarely drives an SLP’s schedule the way it does for PT and OT.
  • Productivity is still usually measured in minutes, so a 30-minute and a 45-minute session count differently toward your target even if they bill the same way.
  • ASHA notes productivity standards aren’t set by payers and don’t affect reimbursement. They’re employer decisions.

SLP-specific pressures that affect your number

  • Dysphagia and swallow evaluations on short notice. Unplanned evals and instrumental studies can push treatment later in the day.
  • Patients unavailable for meals or medical procedures. Swallow treatment often has to fit around meal times.
  • Family and caregiver training. It matters for outcomes, but it often isn’t credited.
  • Cognitive-communication documentation. Detailed notes take time that rarely counts.
