What Does 80% Productivity Mean?

An 80% productivity target means 80 out of every 100 paid minutes should be billable treatment. In an 8-hour paid day, that’s 384 billable minutes (6 hours 24 minutes), with 96 minutes left for everything else. It’s also the most common target: ASHA’s survey of SLPs in health care has found a median requirement of exactly 80% in every survey from 2015 to 2025.

85%451 min (7 h 31 min)3:01 PM67

Seen the other way: at a fixed 8-hour paid day, moving from 80% to 85% means 24 more billable minutes every day. Over a 5-day week that’s 2 more hours of treatment, and 2 fewer hours for notes and everything else.

That leaves about 9 minutes of slack, which a single late patient or extra evaluation will use up.

Is 80% productivity reasonable?

For most adult health care settings, 80% sits right at the middle of what SLPs report. Whether it’s reasonable for you depends on:

  • Whether documentation and meetings count as productive
  • How many evaluations you do
  • Your cancellation rate
  • Travel between units or buildings

If you’re consistently finishing notes after hours at 80%, the issue is likely what’s being counted, not your speed.
