Worked examples
| Service hours / month | Minimum supervision (5%) |
|---|---|
| 40 | 2 h |
| 80 | 4 h |
| 120 | 6 h |
| 160 | 8 h |
Billable percentage = service hours ÷ paid hours × 100. For 120 service hours in 150 paid hours: 80%.
Is supervision time billable?
It depends on the payer and the service. Some payers cover certain supervision activities under specific CPT codes; others don’t. Check your payer contracts and your organization’s billing policy.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 5% supervision?
Multiply monthly service hours by 0.05. 120 hours needs at least 6 hours.
Does drive time count as service hours?
For the supervision calculation, only hours spent providing behavior-analytic services count. Drive time usually doesn’t. Check the BACB handbook and your employer.
What’s a good billable percentage for an RBT?
We haven’t found a public national benchmark. Compare with your employer’s target.
