Example 1: SNF PT, standard 8-hour day
7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, 30-minute unpaid lunch. 480 paid minutes. 10 patients totaling 410 minutes.
- 410 ÷ 480 = 85.4%. Target met with 2 minutes to spare (408 needed).
Example 2: Outpatient PT, 7.5-hour paid day
8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, 30-minute unpaid lunch. 450 paid minutes. 8 patients, but one 45-minute no-show leaves 345 minutes.
- 345 ÷ 450 = 76.7%. An 80% target needs 360, so 15 minutes short.
Example 3: Home health OT measured in visits
6 visits at 45 minutes each = 270 treatment minutes on a 480-minute paid day.
- 270 ÷ 480 = 56.3%, but the agency measures visits, and 6 of 6 were done. Percentages look low in home health because driving isn’t billable.
Example 4: IRF OT
480 paid minutes, 375 billable.
- 375 ÷ 480 = 78.1% against a 75% target (360 needed).
Example 5: Pediatric SLP
480 paid minutes. 6 sessions × 45 minutes + one 60-minute evaluation = 330.
- 330 ÷ 480 = 68.8%. A 70% target needs 336, so 6 minutes short.
Example 6: SNF SLP on a 10-hour shift
6:30 AM to 5:00 PM with a 30-minute unpaid lunch = 600 paid minutes. 500 billable.
- 500 ÷ 600 = 83.3%. An 85% target needs 510, so 10 minutes short.
Example 7: SNF OT with a co-treat
480 paid minutes. 330 one-on-one, plus a 60-minute co-treat with PT.
- Full credit: 390 ÷ 480 = 81.3%
- Half credit: 360 ÷ 480 = 75.0%
- Same day, a 6.3-point difference. Ask how your employer credits co-treats.
Example 8: Late start, same clock-out
Normally 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Today you start at 7:30 AM and still leave at 3:30 PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch. 450 paid minutes.
- An 85% target now needs 383 billable minutes, not 408.
- 383 ÷ 450 = 85.1%. Met.

Frequently asked questions
Why does the home health example look so low?
Driving between homes is paid but not billable, so percentages run low. That’s one reason many agencies use visits or points.
Do these examples use real patients?
No. They’re illustrative days built to show the math.
What if my day doesn’t match any of these?
